Adolescent Gynecology
Gynecological exams are valuable to adolescents in many ways. It is important for young women to be assessed early, especially if they are sexually active, and to begin a relationship with a doctor that may guide them through many important times in their lives. Dr. Wood provides special care and confidentiality to his younger patients.
A typical adolescent exam includes a consultation, a full medical assessment and a minimally invasive exam depending on the specific patient. If the patient is not sexually active, the pelvic exam may be modified or may not be required. Since a gynecological exam may be overwhelming for a teenager, Dr. Wood will make sure to carefully and thoroughly explain the exam process and answer any questions the patient may have. He will also answer any concerns the patient may have about their bodies as they enter adulthood. Dr. Wood is extra sensitive with his younger patients and works hard to develop their trust and hopefully begin a long lasting relationship.

Vaginitis
Vaginitis is a common infection of the vagina that causes itching, pain and discharge. Patients may develop this condition as a result of a change in the vaginal bacteria levels, low hormone levels, from yeast, or from sexually-transmitted pathogens.
The treatment for vaginitis depends on the etiology, so it is important for patients to see a physician to make the correct diagnosis. Oral and topical medications are often effective in relieving symptoms and clearing any infection, usually within a week. Low hormonal levels may be corrected with estrogen supplements, in the form of vaginal creams, tablets or rings.
Menopause
Menopause begins when a woman’s ovaries begin producing less estrogen. It is a gradual process for most women and the entire process may take several years. Many women going through menopause suffer from a wide range of symptoms including irregular bleeding, hot flashes, insomnia, night sweats, fatigue, depression and more.
There are several treatment options available, both hormonal and non-hormonal, to help relieve the symptoms and conditions of menopause. Dr. Wood can work with you to help you decide which option is best for you.

Infertility Treatment
Couples who have not been able to conceive after one year of trying are considered infertile. Approximately 10% of couples in the United States are infertile.
Infertility may be caused by a female factor, male factor, or both. The investigation involves testing of both the female and male partner starting with simple noninvasive tests and proceeding until an etiology is found. In some cases however, a clear cause may not be identified.
Treatment may be as simple as taking a medication to induce ovulation or as extensive as surgery to correct abnormalities like endometriosis. Dr. Wood has experience in evaluating and treating infertility patients and offers services to include intrauterine inseminations, pelvic surgery, and tubal reversals for women with a prior tubal ligation. If it is determined that ART ( In Vitro Fertilization) is your best option for achieving a pregnancy and an option you would like to pursue, he will coordinate your referral to the appropriate center.
