A natural vaginal birth is not always possible for all babies. In some cases, a delivery through a surgical incision in the abdomen and uterus is necessary. A cesarean section may be planned or the decision to perform one may be made while you are in labor. Common indications for a cesarean section include multiple gestations, breech presentation, failure to progress through labor, and concern for the baby’s well being. A cesarean section is needed in approximately 25% of pregnancies.
